Berlin, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Hertha Berlin added defender Felix Bastians from Freiburg and signed defender Christian Lell to a contract extension, with both players inking contracts through the summer of 2016. Bastians, 23, played for Germany at various youth levels. He spent time in the youth systems of Borussia Dortmund and Nottingham Forest, where he first broke into the senior team in 2005.

Lell, 27, joined Hertha from Bayern Munich two years ago and previously agreed to extend his stay with the club, but has now officially signed a new deal.

Paisley, Scotland (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - St. Mirren signed Jim Goodwin to a new two-year contract Thursday, locking up its captain through the summer of 2014. Goodwin, 30, started his career with Celtic and later played at Stockport, Scunthorpe, Huddersfield, Oldham, and Hamilton before joining St. Mirren last January.

Capped once by the Republic of Ireland, the midfielder was a target of rival Hibernian this winter.

"[Van Tornhout] is over six feet tall, he holds the ball well and will connect the top end of the pitch for us," Coach Shiels said. "He moves well with a decent understanding of the game. He's a big lad so he'll offer us a different style. We've become a little bit predictable at times so he'll give us variety in attack."

"We had him on trial last year and followed him ever since," said Earthquakes manager Frank Yallop. "He's an intelligent, experienced player who should help with the depth on our squad."

The German-born Turkish striker also played for Vestel Manisaspor in Turkey, and represented his country at the youth level.

"I am really happy to sign with the San Jose Earthquakes and Major League Soccer," said Guvenisik. "It has always been my dream to play in the United States."

He started his MLS career with the Columbus Crew in 2002 and remained with the club through 2006. He then played for the Chicago Fire from 2007-09, winning a MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2007.
